Buddy
It was very early, yet town seemed to be very active. Buddy had just turned onto Main Street and everything was bustling. There were lots of people scurrying from store to store and then coming back out of each with something in there hands. Buddy made his way slowly down to the General Store. This was a usual stop for him. If he was lucky and the old man behind the counter was not to busy he would throw Buddy a dog treat or give him a bowl of water. He was a sweet old man, sort of like Buddy himself. They got along quiet well, the man always knew when Buddy would stop in and he tried to get something ready for him. Buddy smiled as he remembered a man he had met in California. He also had owned a small store and any time Buddy and Peter would walk in he gave them something to snack on. Buddy remembered that man well.
Buddy came back from his thoughts and continued to mosey down Main Street. Buddy now realized that he had ventured to close to one of the men walking down the road, nearly walking right into him. You filthy mongrel, he said making his way around Buddy who was standing right in front of him. Buddy always shook these encounters off, most humans did not see him that way after all. When he did finally reach the General Store he limped up the front steps. His limp really did make these stairs more difficult then they were but Buddy got used to it after a while. The fourth and final step always gave him difficulty, it was a little higher then the rest. No matter, Buddy hoped onto the wood porch and walked right in. The small store was still dark, except for the rays of sun coming in one of the back windows. There seemed to be a rather long line at the counter so Buddy decided to take a stroll around the store before going to see the old man.
he started his investigation at the back of the store. There were many things sitting on the shelves that clung to the wall. Toys, seasonings, fabric and some other things in small boxes. Something on the fabric shelf caught Buddy's eye. The fabric that caught his gaze was blue with small yellow flowers printed on it. He vaguely remembered Peter's little sisters running around that old log cabin with that exact pattern on there dresses that were hand made by their mother. Buddy quickly looked away, this was to much to handle. He limped up to the counter and sat, waiting for whatever the old man had prepared. The man had apparently not noticed Buddy walk in earlier and said, Oh there you are, I was wondering where you were. He was a jolly old man and he really enjoyed Buddy. The elderly man turned and went into the small room behind the counter where all the extra stuff was stored. Here we are, Buddy could hear the man say from within the small room. Buddy wagged his tail as the man appeared. Chicken, thats what todays breakfast was. Buddy waited patiently for the man to make his way out from behind the counter. The man knelt down before him and gave the chicken to Buddy. Buddy wagged his tail once more and turned to make his way out to the porch.Take care of yourself now, Buddy heard the man say to him.
This was really a pretty good way to live. Buddy found a nice spot on the porch and laid down. He licked his chicken once or twice and then ate it. It really hit the spot. After it was all gone he still sat on the porch, watching everything that was going on around him. The streets had become less busy since he walked out that front door. Everyone wanted to get there shopping done early, he thought, before the sun got to hot. Buddy noticed two young children, a boy and a girl. They had just walked out of a nearby store and noticed Buddy lying on the porch. They whispered something to there mother and then they began to make there way over to him. Buddy began to wag his tail. They gave him pats on the head and rubs on the back. In return he licked there hands. After a while they walked away to rejoin their mother. Buddy sighed and placed his head between his paws.
